Since the format war over high-definition optical discs had ended in February 2008, HD format seems to be dead. But people all over the world still have HD players but there’s no movie to play with.

Do you still have your HD DVD player? Come on, don’t waste them.

HD DVD was supported by Toshiba and developed by DVD Forum. It had been launched in 2005 and has the storage capacity of 15 GB per layer. It was created to be the successor to the previous DVD format. However, Toshiba had announced that it would no longer developer HD DVD players or drivers in February 2008. The announcement brought an end to the format war over high-definition optical discs, a competition between HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc.

Blu-ray Disc is designed by Sony and developed by Blu-ray Disc Association. It has 25 GB of storage capacity per layer a thinner cover layer (0.1 mm) compared to HD DVD and DVD (0.6 mm). Blu-ray Disc currently being used in running Playstation 3 games, high-definition video and data storage with 50 GB per disc. The announcement from Toshiba to discontinue the development of HD DVD players and drivers had made Blu-ray Disc as the standard DVD format until today.

It’s undeniable that Blu-ray Disc is the most preferred storage nowadays but that doesn’t mean that the HD format will be forgotten forever. People from all over the world still have their HD DVD players but the problem is there is no movie to play with the players.

There’s also a program to upgrade your Warner Bros. HD DVD titles into Blu-ray discs named Red 2 Blu. You can trade your Warner Bros. HD DVD titles if you have one into Blu-ray discs at a low price.

I am a movie lover and have my own HD DVD player. It’s a sad thing to know that the HD format had been discontinued but I believe there are still a lot of movies to watch through HD DVD players.

Don’t worry if you’re still have your HD DVD player because you’re not going to waste them. HD DVD Home Page provides you the solution. There are over 130 unique movies on HD DVD for you to see. Is a bad bit of business from Toshiba or just a master stroke from Sony that no one could have predicted? Will Toshiba try and get into the market again with a new design and contract or is it game over?

Yes, I have seen it on the internet as well that Warner Bros has launched that program to send blu-ray discs for the title of your older movies. I hope others will follow that example too.It is a bit unfortunate that it is only available for those who live in the US. The price is not too bad either, around 5 dollars plus mailing cost.
But as far as I know – please, correct me if I am wrong – the blu-ray players are able to handle the older format dvds, even upscaling them
